When Papa Goes to Prison
Tues. Sept. 14, 2010
The Hershey Public Library
701 Cocoa Avenue
Hershey, PA
7 p.m.
When we “lock them up and throw away the key,” our problems are solved…or are they? Whether it’s “Papa” or “Mama,” a parent behind bars leaves a broken family, barred from a normal life. Fractured from the loss of emotional and financial support, marked with the stigma of incarceration, and ridiculed or shunned by their community- all for a crime the family didn’t commit. Children of incarcerated parents are also more likely to be incarcerated in the future.
Rev. Anne Myers knows firsthand the heartache and impact of imprisonment. She was five years old when her father, now deceased, went to prison – where he remained for 15 years. As an ordained Presbyterian minister and director of the Facility Chaplaincy Program at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Camp Hill (the largest of the Pennsylvania state prisons, housing up to 4,000 men), she sees that same impact on these inmates’ families.
Join us for “When Papa Goes To Prison” as Rev. Myers discusses her personal experiences and how, as people of faith, we can and should care about those who are incarcerated and the families they leave behind. The discussion will also comment on many of our pressing and often misunderstood prison/criminal justice issues. A question-and-answer session will follow. Refreshments will be served starting at 6:30 p.m.
Our Speaker: Rev. Anne Myers
Prior to her arrival at SCI Camp Hill in 2008, Rev. Anne Myers was associate pastor at Pine Street Presbyterian Church in downtown Harrisburg for 17 years. Before that she served pastorates in Gettysburg and Philadelphia, Pa. and Wilmington, Del. A native of North Carolina, Rev. Myers is a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill and Princeton Theological Seminary. She is married with two adult children

Attendees may make a donation during the program. Monies donated will be used to purchase modern translations of the Bible for men incarcerated at SCI Camp Hill.

What Is JustFAITH Ministries?
JustFAITH Ministries is an organization that seeks to form, inform, and transform people of faith by offering programs and resources on social justice issues that stir a compassionate commitment to build a more just and peaceful world. Through them, participants develop a passion and thirst for justice, which prepares them for the work of social ministry. The programs address the core of Gospel teaching: what is it that opens people’s hearts to recognize their “kindredness” and to respond to each other’s needs with heartfelt compassion, generosity, and care.
The organization’s workshops and programs help participants expand their commitment to address pressing social justice issues via social ministry within their faith communities. The topics, many of which have their roots in poverty, include global climate change, the ecological crisis, immigration, prison and the criminal justice system, torture, solidarity, and nonviolent peacemaking. The programs offer life-changing opportunities for members of a church or parish to study, explore, and experience Christ’s call to care for the poor and vulnerable in a lively, challenging, multifaceted process in the context of a small faith community.
Jack Jezreel, M.Div., founder and executive director of JustFAITH Ministries, introduced the original
30-week “JustFAITH” program in 1989 while working in a parish in Louisville, Ky. It was immediately and dramatically successful. Since then, more than 20,000 participants have participated in the JustFAITH program in more than 1,000 parishes and churches. JustFAITH is available in two versions, one for the larger Christian community and one for Catholic parishes that highlights themes of Catholic social teaching.
