Today we begin Respect Life Month. Doesn’t it seem strange that we Catholics have to be reminded to respect life!? But it is true. We human beings have an amazing ability to do awful things to our fellow human beings. We abort millions of children in the womb throughout the world every year; we find it acceptable that the few grow richer while brothers and sisters die of hunger; we do not like to acknowledge the sexual trafficking of women and children in our very own society; we so exult youth and beauty that we often neglect the elderly; we legalize the active killing of those whose end of life should be attended with even greater care and compassion. History is filled with countless stories of man’s inhumanity to man. Sadly, it may always be so. But I think it is so important to remember that we Christians follow a Savior who came to BRING life, not to take it; who GAVE his own life rather than to take the lives of others. We who call ourselves followers of Jesus Christ must ALWAYS speak up for, and work for, a culture of life. We do that through the legislative and educational process, yes; but most importantly we do it in the way we live our lives: the care we show our families; the service we give the vulnerable; the help we extend to the stranger. The world may say and act otherwise but WE are Christians and with every fiber of our being may we be the greatest protectors of life!
