Tenebrae Service is a service of darkness. It is an ancient ceremony combining scripture lessons and hymns with the extinguishing of candles and lights until the church is in total darkness. This is symbolic of the flight  of Jesus’ disciples, the approach of the dark hate of Jesus’ enemies, and the darkness of days of Our Lord in the tomb. Near the end of the service a loud sound simulates the sound of an earthquake, signifying the moment Jesus died.
