Joseph A. English, Sr, 96, of Hershey, Pennsylvania, passed away on May 29, 2014.
He was born August 21, 1917 in Memphis, TN, son of the late Antonino & Rose (Forte) English. Joe retired from the Hershey Chocolate Co., where he was a syrup operator. He was a member of St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church, 359 West Areba Ave. Hershey; the Hershey Italian Lodge; and the Chocolate Workers Local #464. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and a Purple Heart recipient. He fought in the second wave of Omaha Beach and was wounded in action just prior to the Battle of the Bulge. He enjoyed playing golf and watching sports, especially Notre Dame. Mr. English is survived by: a son - Joseph A. English Jr. and wife Sandra; daughter - Maria R. English; granddaughter - Erin and husband Tazio Palermo; two grandsons - Jordan and Jonathan English; and great-granddaughter - Gianna Palermo; all of Hershey; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Augustina D. English; brothers, John, Frank, & Nathan; and a sister Concentina Galipo. A visitation will be held Tuesday, June 3, 2014 from 9:30 - 10:30 AM, in the Hoover Funeral Homes & Crematory, Inc., of Hershey, followed by Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11:00 am in his church. Interment with military honors will be in the Hershey Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial contributions be made to Compassionate Care Hospice, 1531 Cedar Cliff Drive, Suite 100, Camp Hill, PA 17011. Freda Memmi, 95, of Hershey, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, May 23, 2014. She was born on November 18, 1919 in Robertsdale, the daughter of the late Grazio and Domenica (Gambacorta) Memmi.
Her family moved to Hershey in 1930, and she attended the Hershey public schools. She worked in the moulding department of the Hershey Chocolate Factory, and during the war she was employed at the Middletown Air Depot. After the war, she worked for Hershey Estates, and was then employed by the Hershey Entertainment and Resorts Company, from whom she retired. She also helped with the family business, G. Memmi and Sons Bakery from 1951 to 1986. Freda was a devout Catholic and a member of Saint Joan of Arc Church, Hershey. She liked to read and spend her days at home. She also loved when family stopped by to say hello. Family always came first. She is survived by 6 nephews, 6 nieces, and numerous grandnephews, grandnieces, great-grandnephews, and great-grandnieces. Our Aunt Freda will be missed. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at 11 AM in her church. Visitation will be Tuesday morning from 9:30 - 10:30 in the Hoover Funeral Home & Crematory of Hershey. Elsie was born on December 20, 1930 in Hershey; daughter of the late Alphonso and Eleanor Carlucetti. She was a talented beautician for over 55 years, and an avid tennis and golf enthusiast. Elsie was an exceptional cook, and dedicated, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to all who knew her. Elsie's' family always came first, and she will be deeply missed.
Elsie is survived by her husband of 60 years, Pete Marcucci, a daughter Judith Pritchett, wife of Kyle Pritchett, and a son John Marcucci, husband of Gina Marcucci, five grandchildren, Krystin, Matthew, Gordon, Lewis and Carmen, four great-grandchildren, Taylor, Marcus, Cameron, and Cosette, all of Hershey, and many extended family members and friends. A memorial mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 28th at 11:00am in the St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church, Hershey. There will be no viewing or visitation. He was born May 5, 1931 in Scranton, the son of the late James and Marion (Otley) Curtin.
Joe was a graduate of the University of Scranton and served in the Army during the Korean War. He spent the majority of his working career as a computer analyst for the Federal Government at the Mechanicsburg Naval Support Facility. Prior to that, he was employed as a systems engineer with IBM. After retirement, he enjoyed working at the fitness center at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center. He was a member of the St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #6693, American Legion Post # 386 and the Hershey Italian Lodge, all of Hershey. Joe is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Marcocci Curtin; a daughter, Monica (Robert) Reese of Lancaster; 3 sons, Dr. Paul (MaryAnn) Curtin of Hershey, Kevin (Kelly) Curtin of Elizabethtown, Dr. Sean (Yolanda) Curtin of Jarrettsville, MD; 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, May 24th at 1:00pm in his church at 359 West Areba Ave., Hershey, PA 17033. Interment will follow in the Hershey Cemetery. Viewings will be held in the Hoover Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., Hershey, on Friday evening from 5:30pm - 7:30pm and also on Saturday from 11:30am - 12:30pm. Recitation of the Rosary will be held Friday evening at 5:00pm at the funeral home. Born in Patterson, NJ, on April 2, 1943, she was the daughter of Patrick Vadella of Carbondale and the late Arlene Swegel Vadella. Darlene was a co-owner, with her husband Jim, of Keystone Artificial Limb & Orthopedics, Harrisburg. She was also previously a secretary for the PA Dept. of Justice, a teller at Fulton Bank, Hummelstown, and a clerk at the Hummelstown 7-11. Darlene was a 1961 graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale. She was an active member of St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church, Hershey, and was on the Council of Catholic Women of St. Joan of Arc. Darlene enjoyed sewing and knitting, and was a member of several sewing clubs including the Hershey Library Quilters Club, Grace Bible Church Quilting Club, and the St. Joan of Arc Prayer Shawl Ministry. Even more than she enjoyed her sewing, Darlene loved spending time with her family; especially her grandchildren. Darlene is survived by her father; her loving husband of 48 years, James Edward Bouch, whom she married on October 29, 1966; two daughters, Mary Beth Moser and Katherine A. Buohl both of Middletown, MD; a son, James Joseph Bouch husband of Christine of Hummelstown; eleven brothers and sisters; and six grandchildren. In addition to her mother, Darlene was preceded in death by a brother, Patrick Kevin Vadella. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at 11 AM in St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church, 359 West Areba Avenue, Hershey, with The Rev. Brian J. Wayne as celebrant. Friends will be received for the viewings Monday, May 5, 2014, from 4 to 7 PM, and Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 AM in the Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown. A private family interment will be held in Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Carbondale. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes to have memorial contributions made to Hospice of Central PA, 1320 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
