Mary Petrina Smith, 59, of Hummelstown, passed away on October 20, 2017, at home in the loving care of her family. She was born August 4, 1958, daughter of the late Irene Arasim Petrina and Rudolph “Rudy” Richard Petrina of Hummelstown.
Mary graduated from Lower Dauphin High School in 1977, and from The Pennsylvania State University in 1981 with a Bachelors Degree in Social Work. She worked at the former Alpine Nursing Home in Hershey and the dental office of Dr. Richard Walters in Hershey. She was a member of Saint Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Hershey. Mary loved spending time with her family. She was an empathetic person who helped anyone she could and made her chicken soup to comfort friends. In high school, she played softball and the baritone saxophone in the marching band. She was an avid Penn State football fan, enjoying tailgates with family and friends, and cheering on the team. She made pierogies and nut rolls from scratch, carrying on her mother’s traditions. She made many trips to the Delaware Shore, New York City, Adirondack Mountains and Maine. She was especially proud of her children and encouraged them in all they did, including their academic achievements. Mary is survived by her husband of 33 years, James Murdock Smith, their daughter Jennifer and their son Ryan of Hummelstown; her sisters, Susan Petrina of Hummelstown, Kathleen Rock (husband Robert) of Palmyra, and Laurie Fleming (husband Michael) of Clarks Summit, PA; niece Sarah Rock Stromberg (husband Christopher and their son Tyler), and nephews Connor and Aaron Fleming; and Tico. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, October 28, 2017, at 10:30 AM in St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 359 West Areba Avenue, Hershey, with The Rev. Fr. Alfred P. Sceski as celebrant. Interment will be in the Hummelstown Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday, October 27, 2017, from 6 to 8 PM in the Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown. In lieu of food, gifts and flowers, the family prefers that contributions be sent to Lower Dauphin Communities That Care, 29 Waverly Drive, Hummelstown, PA 17036.
