Richard P. "Dick" Stewart, Jr., 81, of West Hanover Township and formerly of Hummelstown, passed away Monday, August 25, 2014, in the Harrisburg Hospital.
Born in Somers Point, NJ, on February 11, 1933, he was the son of the late Richard P., Sr., and Ethel M. Smith Stewart. Dick retired as the Regional Manager for health insurance from the Anthem Insurance Agency in Illinois, and was a car salesman for the former Warner Motors, Hummelstown, and Sutliff Cadillac, Mechanicsburg. He was a 1951 graduate of Ocean City High School, Ocean City, NJ, and a 1955 graduate of Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ. Dick served in the U.S. Army having reached the rank of Second Lieutenant. He was an active member of St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church, Hershey, where he served as an usher for over 30 years. Dick was a charter member and the first President of the Hummelstown Optimist Club, an office he held several times; and held positions with Optimist International as the Governor of the Pennsylvania and Upper Delaware District, and Lieutenant Governor of the Harrisburg District. He was a coach of the former Fuzzy Few Organization Girls' Softball Team, Hummelstown. Dick was an avid golfer; collected watches; and enjoyed watching sports mainly the Phillies, Eagles, and Lower Dauphin High School games. He was a very personable man who enjoyed being with people, but most important to Dick was spending time with his family especially during vacations to the beach. Dick is survived by his beloved wife, Mildred M. Denan Stewart, whom he married in October of 1956; two daughters, Lee Anne Doman and her significant other Gary E. Miles of Mountville, and Gwen A. Stewart and her significant other Kim A. Brink of Steelton; and one granddaughter, Jennifer L. Lewis wife of David B. of Haddon Township, NJ. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, August 29, 2014, at 1 PM in St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church, 359 West Areba Avenue, Hershey. Interment will be in the Hershey Cemetery. Friends will be received Thursday, August 28, 2014, from 7 to 9 PM in the Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc. 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown. Rosary will be recited Thursday at 6:45 PM in the funeral home.
